Video: Big Sean f/ Chris Brown – ‘My Last’

Big Sean and Chris Brown

Big Sean grinds his way to the top in the celebratory video for “My Last,” the first single from his debut album Finally Famous. The TAJ-directed clip flashes back to five years ago when the Detroit rapper was recording his first mixtape to now, where he’s living the G.O.O.D. life, partying in the Hollywood Hills with hot women and his friends Chris Brown, Teyana Taylor, and Taz Arnold.
Kanye West’s protégé shared how he and Breezy first met. “It’s crazy because he just came to one of my shows randomly one time, and I was like, ‘What the hell is Chris Brown doing here?’” he told Rap-Up.com. “He came up and was talking to me like, ‘Yo, what’s up fam! I f**k with your music heavy. I’m down to work, let’s work.’ I’m like, damn, that’s cold that somebody on that level of success that’s been doing it for a while would come f**k with somebody like me who’s a new artist.”
Put your hands up in the air and get down to the G.O.O.D. Music below.

Kanye West and G.O.O.D. Music Turn Up the Power at SXSW

Kanye West and Jay-Z

The star power was shining extra bright at the Seaholm Power Plant in Austin, Texas, over the weekend as VEVO presented G.O.O.D. Music in concert with headliner Kanye West. Heralded as the highlight of South by Southwest (SXSW), 2500 guests, including Beyoncé, Diddy, Cassie, and Asher Roth, were treated to a three-hour spectacular by hip-hop’s dominating crew.
As the label’s logo lit up the stage in flashing colors, the G.O.O.D. Music fam comprised of John Legend, Kid Cudi, Mos Def, Big Sean, Pusha T, CyHi the Prynce, Mr Hudson, and Fonzworth Bentley took turns sharing the mic with Mr. West, clad in all black everything. Bon Iver and Teyana Taylor also stepped in to lend their vocals to tracks from My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.
After changing into a red blazer and drawstring pants, ‘Ye brought out a marching band for a triumphant rendition of “All of the Lights.” But the camera phones (and iPads) really came out when Jay-Z stormed the stage, trading verses with Yeezy on “H•A•M,” “Monster,” and “So Appalled.” He even took it back to 2000 with “Big Pimpin’.”
Around 4 a.m., Kanye’s labelmates joined him onstage for the star-studded “Good Life” finale, shutting down the powerful evening.

Lupe Fiasco Turns The "Lasers" On His Critics (PHOTOS)

Lupe Fiasco has been going through some growing pains lately. The intellectual and politically vocal rapper has been up front about the label troubles that have crippled his long awaited new album "Lasers," (out March 8th) all the while dealing with internal struggles regarding his musical vision. But regardless of the hype or negative feedback, Lupe has never shied away from confronting his own agenda or personal ambivalence.
When it comes down to it, Lupe's self-expression and exploration is the mark of an artist who isn't afraid to exorcise his own demons, regardless of any outside controversy. As a talented and important artist, Lupe has a unique voice and has carved himself a niche in the world of hip-hop, but it's still up to us to listen to what he has to say.
"I was literally told for ('Lasers' first single) 'The Show Goes On' that I shouldn't rap too deep," he told "The Chicago Tribune." "I shouldn't be too lyrical. It just needs to be something easy on the eyes...." To "The Chicago Sun Times" he reiterated,“‘Don’t rap too deep on this record.' That was a specific order from the top. ‘You’re rapping too fast or too slow, or it’s too complex.’"
LISTEN: Lupe Fiasco "All Black Everything"
Fiasco has been vocal about his distaste for the "360" deals, the standard record deal for new artists that allows labels to make money off of more than just album sales, including tour merchandise and songwriting publishing. In Lupe's opinion, because he refused to sign a 360 deal, his project is less of a priority for his record company, Atlantic.
Last year, fans of the rapper organized "Fiasco Friday," where they rallied for the release of "Lasers." Most recently, the album leaked online a week before its release date. After the initial support from fans, it may be that some of the listening public and critics are disappointed with what they fought for, or it's not quite what they expected.
"I never thought "Lasers" would inspire so much negativity. Reading the comments and reactions is crushing," Lupe tweeted  in response to the feedback. "To all the Lupe fans who protested and petitioned you did a GREAT thing. Don’t let people belittle what u achieved. You forced a massive corporation to bow to the whim of the people. That's a glorious thing. Love always shines...It’s a beautiful day today. Go out and be beautiful with it."
PHOTOS: Dear Lupe...
Yet Lupe has admitted his own struggles with the material on "Lasers." "I'm comfortable and happy with the record as a whole, where before there was an imbalance," he explained. "I hate this record, the process of making this record, and I love this record. What I had to go through was not fun, the ugliness I saw in people. But I love the manifesto, that the message got out, that fans protested for four hours in front of the label's New York headquarters and demanded attention."

While "Lasers" may not boast club-worthy jams that are easy on the ears, sometimes taking the journey with the artist is just as important as a radio-ready hit. Music stems from emotion and Lupe has successfully tapped into that part of himself as he discusses his dreams for a race-free world in "All Black Everything" and questions the President in "Words I Never Said" featuring Skylar Grey.
"There are consequences and combat that comes from that process and the eventual compromise," Lupe told the Sun Times, "With me, though, I’m not writing about someone else. I’m writing about me. This is my life. It’s very personal for me. So for somebody to kind of put their fingers in that and play with that, it becomes more damaging.”
LISTEN: "Words I Never Said" And Other Beats You Can't Ignore
Maybe Lupe still hasn't made exactly the record he set out to make but he certainly got his message across. "Hopefully I'll be out of my traditional record deal, the record deal I'm in right now. Probably living in Africa somewhere, making rock music," he told Hot 97, "Independent comes with its own set of consequences, so that takes preparation. There's a lot of things you're going to lose taking that route."
We can only wait and see what road Lupe will take next, but regardless, his fans are willing to take that journey with him.
Lupe Fiasco takes on critics, fans and himself as he readies his "Lasers" release for March 8th.

Ne-Yo and Trey Songz Link Up in London

Ne-Yo and Trey Songz

Ne-Yo is currently trekking around the U.K. on his arena tour with supporting act Trey Songz. The R&B gentlemen met up backstage at their sold-out London show to discuss a possible collaboration for Ne-Yo’s next album.
The “Closer” singer plans to keep the concept less complicated than last year’s story-driven Libra Scale. “I’m definitely gonna make this one a little more simple,” he told Rap-Up TV. “I feel like [on] Libra Scale, I got a little too cool for the room. It was a little difficult to understand what was going on, catch the concept. So this one is gonna be more about just listening to the music and vibing out.”

Video: Esperanza Spalding Talks Grammy Win, Backlash from Bieber Fans

Esperanza Spalding became an overnight sensation when she beat out Justin Bieber for Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards, and quickly faced the wrath of his Beliebers. The jazz musician appeared on Monday’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” where she discussed how she jetted to Japan after winning the award, and only recently learned about the attacks on her Wikipedia page.

“People kept telling me, ‘Have you heard about this on Wikipedia?’ and at first I was like, ‘Who cares? It’s Wikipedia. Don’t you take it with a grain of salt?’” said the afro-sporting singer. “I guess they changed my name and did all sorts of crazy things. I heard today that my middle name is actually Quesadilla. And I thought, if that’s the worst they could come up with, then it’s all good. Take it in stride.”
She also recalled meeting the teen sensation after the show, and that his kind words touched her heart. “He was very sweet. I was complimenting him and saying, ‘You’re so talented, you have so many years to do so many amazing things. Your mom must be so proud.’ And then he laid this one on me, which was surprising. He said, ‘My mom is proud of me anyway, because she loves me,’” she continued. “I thought it was sincere and I was impressed.”
Spalding, who released her third album Chamber Music Society last year, spoke on playing at the White House four times. While some artists might get nervous meeting President Obama, she was too enamored by musicians in the front row to let her nerves get the best of her.
“He’s very kind and was very gracious,” she explained. “[I] shook his hand, said hello, tried not to get all googly. Just very gracious. And also, the first time I played for them, Paul Simon was there and Herbie Hancock was there and Stevie Wonder was there. So I sort of was preoccupied with the front row lineup and didn’t have time to be nervous with him or anything.”

10 Questions for Marsha Ambrosius

Marsha Ambrosius

“I’ve been completely selfish,” Marsha Ambrosius admits. So what exactly has the soulful songbird been greedy with? Her songwriting skills. The 33-year-old British import has steered clear of joining other artists’ studio sessions while crafting her debut solo album, Late Nights & Early Mornings, which fans can hear today. But the singer, who’s also operatically-trained, has an arsenal of tracks to unveil now that her self-described “baby” is out there for the masses. “I do have a million songs that are sitting around that are available for U2, Coldplay, Maroon 5,” she reveals. “[Artists] outside of the norm that people wouldn’t expect me to do.”

The former Floetry member is comfortable doing the unexpected. Just take a look at the video for her single “Far Away.” Created to raise awareness around bullying in the LGBT community, the visuals strike home for Marsha, who sought inspiration for the controversial clip when a close friend attempted suicide. “As far as the video, I wanted something that people weren’t speaking about,” she states.
Now that the album has arrived, her first since parting ways with partner Natalie “The Floacist” Stewart, the talk is in Marsha’s favor. From a remix to Michael Jackson’s “Butterflies” to a cover of Lauryn Hill’s “Lose Myself,” the curly-haired lass shaped the effort to include tracks from “the best in the game.” While some may be surprised at how she was able to score approval from the Fugees’ frontwoman, it’s just the nature of how she handles her business.
Rap-Up.com spoke with Marsha on a brisk afternoon in New York City as she prepared for her big release day, but aside from her debut, she had much to chat about, including her love for Rihanna, getting approval from Lauryn Hill, working on Dr. Dre’s Detox, and freaking out over Prince.
1. What has been the response to the “Far Away” video?
An absolute, overwhelming, positive response. It’s been phenomenal. It’s been an eye opener to many. My intent for the video was to portray an honest approach to a situation that happened to a friend of mine that attempted suicide a couple of years ago. And I felt it only right to depict it in the video in its truest form. The fact that it’s hitting home for many people that hadn’t had the opportunity to have their voices heard, I’m thankful this video is giving that subject matter a platform now.
2. You worked on Alicia Keys’ third LP, As I Am. How was that experience for you?
Wonderful. Alicia Keys co-wrote one song on [my] album and it’s titled “With You.” Initially it was for her project. She asked me to come in and write for her album. There were a couple of other records, but this was the record she didn’t choose for that particular album. So in signing to J Records, I’m like, “Yo, we’re labelmates.” That was like December 2009, so January 1, I was like, “Listen, Alicia. We are labelmates. I had that song that I wanted to do with you. I really want it for my project.” She was all for it.
3. Which artist are you paying attention to now that people may be surprised to hear?
Rihanna. I think she’s so dope. People are surprised that I would say that, and I’m like, “What’s the surprise?” She’s awesome. I love that she’s still from the West Indies and puts her West Indian flair on current pop. With popular artists you want someone that stands out, and she does.
4. You covered Lauryn Hill’s “Lose Myself” on the album. She seems to be very particular about approving the use of her music. What was that process like?
You know what, sometimes you have to let the music speak for itself. Myself, I’ve always respected her as an artist. In creating this song over, I definitely heard the passion behind her lyrics. I know as a songwriter and producer myself, there are only so many co-writers I was gonna have on this project and if I were to have any, of course I would want the best in the game to ever do it, hence the reason why I have an Alicia Keys or a Lauryn Hill on there. These are strong, powerful women who have written songs that have reached millions of people. With “Lose Myself,” I just felt like the song needed to be heard by more people than [those who] just heard the [Surf's Up] soundtrack. I submitted my cover of it and they were all for it.
5. Did you actually get to meet with Lauryn about it?
We’re affiliated with so many in the same circle, being that I’m in Philly and there’s like ?uestlove, like anyone that she’s ever worked with. So there was already a direct line of communication with Lauryn. I knew if I always wanted to reach out and get something done and do it in the best way possible, it was great to connect directly with her. When it was done, I was so thankful it was a yes and not a no. I just wanted to pay my respects.
6. You have several tattoos. What’s the significance of those to you?
The most recent tattoo I got was my lion on my left arm. I got it cause I’m a Leo. I fell in love with the way they had this lion in this tattoo parlor. I was like, “I want that tattoo.” The lady in there said she would freehand it for me so it wouldn’t be exactly like a copy. I didn’t just want a stenciled lion on me. When she did the tattoo, it turns out that some of the shading appeared to be my grandmother’s face when someone pointed it out to me. [The tattoo artist] had no idea that my grandmother had just passed away, but I wanted to do something for my grandmother. I can take a picture of it and you can see her face in the shading in the lion’s mane. It’s really weird. That was 2005, 2006, in Philadelphia. I did get something after that. I touched up my very first butterfly tattoo, which I got because I got in the studio with Michael Jackson and made the song “Butterflies.”
7. At one time you were signed to Dr. Dre’s Aftermath imprint. What’s your relationship like with him now?
Cool. It was a mutual decision to go separate ways. I think in doing the deal I always just wanted to produce and write under that label, like doing the features with Busta Rhymes and Game and things like that, and work under the Interscope umbrella. As far as putting out solo records, they never really had success in R&B before so I took a backseat as far as doing my artist thing. I think because so many bloggers and so many people were assuming that that was in the process is why it feels like it’s taken me so long to do a solo album, where I only just signed to J Records at the end of 2009. It’s taken a year cycle to do all the legal work, get the album ready, get the paperwork together, print it, mix it. All that good stuff.
8. Did you work on Detox at all?
Everyone worked on Detox. Detox, we still don’t know. There’s no official tracklisting for it. I have no idea if any of the stuff I did will make it. We’ll see.
9. Prince is one of your biggest inspirations. Have you ever met him?
A couple of times. He’s definitely invited me over to his crib for every Grammy party. He called me up on stage at a show in Philadelphia and I acted like a lunatic on “The Price Is Right” when they call you up, “And, Marsha Ambrosius!” He called my name out of that crowd like there was no tomorrow. He’s always been cool and always been a fan of what I do. I’m so thankful to have who I consider my top three artists of all time, in no particular order, it’s Prince, Stevie [Wonder], and Michael [Jackson]. Just getting to be creatively around [Prince] and have him respect what I do is just an honor.
10. Your former Floetry partner, the Floacist, recently released a solo album. Do you guys still talk and have you heard her album?
No and no. For Nat and myself, it didn’t end on good terms but as damn near family members—we’re like sisters—you go through things in life where you make your own decisions. We grew up into individuals and when people make decisions about what they want to do in life, you allow them to do so. That’s the right thing to do. There’s no love lost whatsoever. I wish her the best in everything that she does.

Kanye West, Michael Jackson And Other Oscar-Worthy Music Videos (VIDEO)

The 2011 Academy Awards are upon us and even though the ceremony gives out trophies to actors, actresses and all things movie related, what about the forgotten visual medium called the music video?
Music videos have gotten progressively more ambitious, longer and some of them even have budgets that could rival a feature film! GlobalGrind decided to put together a list of some of the most Oscar-worthy music videos throughout the years.
First up is Kanye West's "Runaway." This music video pretty much was already a short film and 'Ye deserves props for his bravado and for testing the limits of what music video really means.
Dr. Dre and Eminem: "I Need A Doctor." Dr. Dre's comeback clip is an epic tale throughout the veteran MC's years in the industry. Plus he crashes a Lambo!
Michael Jackson "Remember The Time": We know, we know, but "Thriller" is a given. We also like "Time" with its Egyptian theme and multiple celebrity cameos...hello Eddie Griffin!
Justin Timberlake: "What Goes Around": This revenge anthem stars the gorgeous Scarlett Johannsson and is eight minutes long. Does Justin get back at her in the end? Watch to find out:
Eminem: "Stan" The Dido-sampling track has a fitting emotional and dark clip showing the mental unraveling of a crazed fan.
Prince: "Purple Rain". This even had a feature length film to go along with it and you know Prince deserves an Oscar!

Jay-Z: "99 Problems": This cool clip was directed by Mark Romanek and won multiple awards. It's entirely in black and white and shows Jay in his hometown of Brooklyn.
