BOOK REAL BIG: Hip-Hop: A Cultural Odyssey (PHOTOS)

Book Real Big: "Hip-Hop: A Cultural Odyssey." ARIA Multimedia 420 Pages, 16 pounds. $300.
Last night, the place to be was LA. Specifically, at The Grammy Museum where "Hip Hop: A Cultural Odyssey," a new book from ARIA Multimedia about hip-hop's legacy, dropped.
"Odyssey" is the first luxury, large format book to trace the 37 year history, origins and influence of global hip-hop culture. And like hip-hop culture, it is large and pushing weight: think 16 pounds and 420 pages. The book also includes large format Polaroid photographs shot by Jonathan Mannion, the photographer responsible for your favorite Jay-Z album cover.  Additionally, the tome features rare photographs, dozens of essays by some of Hip-Hop's leading journalists and scholars; and more than 150 first hand accounts from artists who influenced and shaped the culture. Artists like Big Daddy Kane, Salt N Pepa, Diddy, Kanye, Kool Herc, Bobbito Garcia, Ad RockFab 5 Freddy, Jeru Da Damaja and dozens upon dozens of others. A museum exhibition by the same title will be on view at the Grammy Museum until May 4. The exhibition includes handwritten lyrics by Tupac, LL Cool J's Kangol and Grandmaster Flash's turntables.
Mannion spoke to GlobalGrind via telephone yesterday. Watch this space later for our interview with the talented photographer.
In the meantime, here are some of our favorite images from the book.
